This week on Larry Smith Outdoors, we're firing up the grill before we even hit the water! Larry is joined by a very special guest, Reggie Hayes, the passionate president and founder of the Inner City Sportsmen Club. And making a welcome return is LSO's own chef, "Shotgun" Schafer! The show kicks off with Shotgun and Reggie trading secrets over the grill as they cook up Reggie's legendary crappie recipe.
Reggie shares the incredible story of his club—a grassroots effort he primarily funds himself—dedicated to introducing urban youth to the joys of fishing. He talks about their community events, from fish fries to fishing clinics supported by the Wisconsin DNR, and how they welcome any and all donations to help get kids hooked on the outdoors.
Then, as dusk settles, the real adventure begins. The team heads out for a night of crappie fishing done the old-school way. Hanging lanterns over the side of the boat, Reggie explains the timeless technique: the light draws in insects, the insects attract baitfish, and the baitfish ring the dinner bell for huge schools of crappies. Reggie shares his wisdom on why deep-water summer fish have the best flavor and how the glow of the lanterns can trigger an unbelievable feeding frenzy.
